Its important to know how to use a visual dictionary as an English learner. In fact, Id say that along with a collocation dictionary, a visual dictionary can be a secret weapon when it comes to learning new vocabulary. Of course, youll always need a standard learners dictionary, but using these other types will really help you expand your vocabulary quickly.   Whats the difference between a Visual Dictionary and a Normal Dictionary? A visual dictionary teaches through pictures. It shows you the meaning, rather than telling you the meaning of a word. It shows a picture, photograph, diagram or other image that explains a word. Of course, this means that visual dictionaries generally teach nouns. Nouns are objects in our world and are easily shown in pictures. However, when explaining more abstract terms such as freedom or justice, theres little a visual dictionary can show you to help. This is true for emotions, action verbs, etc.   Visual Dictionary Differences Dictionary Structure Using a standard dictionary requires you to look up a word alphabetically. While this is very helpful, it doesnt connect words to situations. When learning any language context is important. Visual dictionaries are arranged by topic. This allows you to see an object in its context and make stronger associations with other words. This in turn, improves your understanding, as well as quickly expanding knowledge of vocabulary for specific situations. Some visual dictionaries provide explanations of key vocabulary related to a topic providing further context and related vocabulary.   Synonyms and Antonyms One negative aspect of visual dictionaries is that they do not provide words that are in similar (or opposite) in meaning. Traditional dictionaries allow learners to explore language through reading definitions. Through explanations, dictionaries help you learn new vocabulary. This is not the case with visual dictionaries. Pronunciation Many visual dictionaries do not provide pronunciation for individual words. Most dictionaries provide phonetic spellings of words to show pronunciation. Visual dictionaries, with the exception of some online visual dictionaries, do not provide pronunciation help.   How Should I Use a Visual Dictionary? Use a visual dictionary when you need to understand a specific situation or topic. For example, if youd like to learn the names of various parts of a machine, a visual dictionary is the perfect solution. You can learn the names of the parts, discover how they relate to each other, and see examples of common actions related to using a machine.    Visual dictionaries are especially useful for those who want to learn English for a profession. By choosing topics related to your chosen profession, youll be able to quickly learn specific vocabulary. For engineers and other science related professions, this is extremely helpful.   The best use of visual dictionaries is to explore the physical world. Just looking at the diagrams will not only teach you new English vocabulary, but also help you expand your understanding of how the world works. Seeing and learning new vocabulary by topic helps you understand systems by learning to name objects in that system. For example, a visual dictionary might show a cross-image of a volcano. Explanations of each related term will not only teach you new words, but also what makes a volcano explode! When Should I use a Normal Dictionary? Use a standard dictionary when you are reading a book and its important to know the precise meaning of a word. Of course, its always better to try to understand a word through context. If you cant understand the situation without understanding a specific word, the dictionary is your best friend.   What about a Thesaurus? Im glad you asked. A thesaurus provides synonyms and antonyms for words and is especially important if you need to write essays, business letters, or other formal documents in English. At least every child has played video games once in their lives. There are various genres and types of video games such as action, first person shooters, adventure, education, role-playing, strategy, and many more. 89% of video games contain some violent content (Slife, 2008). The most addictive, common, and popular video games among children are the violent video games (Slife, 2008). A lot of video games these days depict â€Å"real-life violence† meaning that the settings and plots of these video games are taken from real-life wars and events. For example, in Call of Duty, the plot is being in World War 2 and doing campaign missions identical to World War 2 events. While playing a video game, no matter what the genre is, the person is bound†¦show more content†¦There is no clear relationship between violent video games and real-life violence and most people do not act out after playing games. Some people such as Douglas Gentile who is a Developmental psychologist believe that video games cause real-life violence and children acting out in violent ways. For example, in 2006, an 18-year-old named Devin Moore was arrested in Alabama on suspicion of car theft and then attacked a police officer, stole his gun, shot two officers, and fled in the police car (Layton). He had no criminal history but it has been said that he played a lot of Grand Theft Auto prior to the killings, which could have led him to do what he did. Clearly, the video game affected his behaviors and he decided to mimic the game and do the same things from the game in real life. Another example is the Columbine shooters Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold apparently played a lot of violent video games such as Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Mortal Kombat before attacking their high school (Layton). The Columbine shooters were affected by video games, it made them more violent, and they their actions during the shooting w ere very similar to the violent video games. Worldview Biblical Essay Theology 104 Ericka Morales Introduction: The term â€Å"image of God† occurs three times in the Bible. In Genesis 1:26-27 and 9:6, we find out that man is created in the image of God. In 2 Cor. It would seem that the first two verses refer to God’s character and attributes that are reflected in people. The term cannot be a reference to a physical appearance of God since Jesus says in John 4:24 that God is Spirit, and in Luke 24:39 Spirit does not have flesh and bones. Therefore, we can conclude that the image of God deals with humanity’s reflection of God in such things as compassion, rationality, love, hatred, fellowship, etc. God exhibits all of these characteristics, as do people. Example 1: A good starting point is to respect others because God said to. For example, we read in the Bible that husbands and wives are to respect their spouse and the wife must respect her husband Ephesians 5:33. Husbands, in the same way are considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect 1 Peter 3:7. The same principle applies to other relationships. Peter wrote that we should show respect to everyone. You can respect your spouse, child, parent, boss or others because of their position. Acknowledge that others have weaknesses. Everyone is imperfect. Be careful not to let their failures erode your respect for their good qualities. Look for things that you can respect. You can find something to respect in anybody if you look hard enough. Respect others as children of God. I work in a retirement community and everyday I interact with residents, families, doctors and nurse’s and my bosses the administrator and executive director and co-workers. I find that by showing respect to every person I come in contact with not only serves God’s plan for me, but my plan for my self. I have a resident who comes into my office several times a day and she does not remember coming in five minute’s before and even though I have work that needs to be completed I stop what I am doing and take the time to show this resident respect and listen. Sometimes it may even be that she doesn’t need my assistance with anything, she just wants a friendly face and a good listener. I hope when I am older a need a friend someone will be there for me as well. I stopped and listened to show respect to my elder and that what she had to say was meaningful and valuable. Example 2: God wants us to have a heart of compassion for others. Compassion involves feeling, but it involves so much more. If we only feel, then we are sympathetic. If our sympathy motivates us to act, then it becomes compassion. True compassion feels and it acts. Notice that compassion begins with feeling. Without feeling, there is no compassion. Feeling is not enough, but it is a place to begin. If we do not weep for those who are hurting, how can we minister to them? We must be about the Savior’s preoccupation with people. I believe that if we serve hurting people, encourage those in despair, help those in need, and hurt with those in pain, we will have not only enriched their lives but have done exactly what God would want us to do. People don’t go where the action is; people go where the love is. I have worked in the geriatric nursing field my entire adult life and the most important impact on the lives that I touch is my ability to be compassionate. I find that when a spouse or children lose their mother or father it is the one of the most traumatic times in their lives. Every person handles grief differently so each time I have consoled a spouse or family member it is different. I’ve held there hands, given them a hug, shared God’s word with them, prayed, and in some cases just been a shoulder to cry on. But if can I can be there for a person in their time of loss and offer compassion and hope and remind them that God is with them, I think it makes a big difference. I have family members and spouses that years down the road have seen in and thanked me for helping them through one of the roughest days of their life. I may not be able to help everyone but the ones I can help I think God would want me too. I have found that by helping others it has created a reward in my life that is immeasurable. Conclusion: Finally, because everyone is made in the image of God, then everyone should be treated with proper respect and honor because they reflect God. Of course, we know that many people are full of evil and hatred and we must guard ourselves and others against them. Still, we are to treat others with respect. During His time on earth, Jesus was the embodiment of God’s compassion. Scripture frequently tells us that Christ was â€Å"moved with compassion† by the suffering of the people Mark 6:34, 8:2. Simple acts of compassion make a difference in every area of life. When our children run through the house and fall down, they need a hug or a kiss to make everything all right. When a friend finds themselves in a tough situation, a listening ear makes all the difference in the world. When someone is sick, a call or a card can brighten their day. ELL students should be able to engage in modeling by usingcognitiveskills, visual skills, and communicationskills to comprehend the lesson. As a native Spanish speaker, itis so important for teachers to understand that bilingual students have double the work. They have to think in their native language first, then mentally translate to be able to participate and understand the lesson. Teachers that have ELL students should keep in mind that speech is very important. Being able to be patient and talk slowlyand clearly will help thesestudents to be successful. For me it co mes easier because I understand how it feelsto be an ELL student. I have had the experienceof being in the classroom and having to ask theteacher to slow down so I can make a quick mental translation to be able to comprehend the lesson. ELL students are visual learners.When you present a visual guide to ELL students, itis easier forthem to interpret the lesson planand follow directions. I know the salary of a teacher is notas high as other professions,but when you have teachers thattake extratime andspend theirown money to do things like decorating the classroom the students appreciate that and they feel more comfortable. Some kids dont have a clean space to study at home and coming to a nice looking classroom makesthem feel safe and relaxed. Eventhe colors and the lighting of a classroom help the students to concentrate better and they do better on homework and tests. Students also feel appreciated when teachers value their effort. For example I keep all my students drawings and pictures because I want them to know that I appreciate their art, creativity,and effort. Another waytovalue our students is through music. Music is a big part of their lives.It is so beautiful when teacher shares their music. Good education start at home, so we need to begin by educating parents. But what are we doing to provideadequate tools to educate low-income families? Of coursebeingwealthy make things easier. Most poor kidsthat try to make it to collegehave to work upto two jobs to pay for tuition and books. So yes, it is sad but true that beingwealthymatters when it comes to education. For me true wealth is obtained when we all work hard together to provide quality education for all students. We bring our culture, traditions, and experiencesthat everyone can learn from.Watchingthis vi deo made me realize that allowing my daughter to only speak Spanish at home was the right thing to do. I was told once by a parent asateacher provider that if I want my daughter to besuccessfulat school I need to only speak to her in English. At first I was worried and sad because Ithoughtthat my daughter would never be able to communicate with other kids at school. But my traditions and culture werestrongenoughand I did not follow thatpoorly thought outrecommendation. We continue talking in Spanish at home and my daughter is capable to communicate in both languages and is a great student. The beautyand uniqueness of a student that can speak several languages is amazing.ELL students are an important piece in the classroom, they make diversity seems special, smarter, and unique. Ibelievethat in the future I will have a lot to offer to ELL students because I can relate to them and I can make aconnectionand understand their struggles with the language. Also I will always encourage all my future ELL studentsand their parents to embrace their language, their culture, and values. Reflection #5 In the United States,education is changingdemographicallyand is even more noticeable at public schools. More people arecoming from other countries, speak other languages, and have different cultural traditions. These demographic changes come withmodificationsandbigimplications for schools, communities, policy makers, students, and parents. Graphics from the articledemonstratethat Hispanics and blacks attended these majority-minority schools, but the sad realityis that most of the students have low SES and the schools arenot properly funded.Im glad to see that the rate of dropouts from school have lower down since 2000. I believe this is the result of a more diverse America, the sense of equality, and prosperity for the American dream. Education hasevolved throughout the years. Now students have more access to technology and with that comes new tools and innovations in todays c lassroom. Reflection #6 Working with middle school and high school ELL students is a challenge.As an ESLspeaker,for meitis easy to understand the differentbenefitsand struggles thatour ELL studentsgothrough.Also that does not mean that I know everything, some ELL student come from various generations ofimmigrants. Someareimmigrantsthat never went to school, theybarelynow hoy to read and write, and some other generations are well educated. Like I said before I can relatetothem because Im a second language speaker,but I cannotrelate to their personal background. Some ELL students come from poor families that are goingthrougha lot ofstrugglesand I can only have empathy for them. Istronglyagree withDr. Short thatELL studentswhoaremoreliteratein their native languagelearn English more easily. This is true andmy daughter and I are perfect examples of this. This is the reason why I will always encourage my future ELL students to keep reading and writing in their own native language.It is sad that most of the nonnative speakers that have been born and raisedin the United Statescanbarelyspeak, read, or writeintheir native language.Also in this video Dr. Short mentions the newcomer program. This program helpsnew ELL students who have little or no English proficiencyand have had limited education in their native countries. This program helpsthose ELL students withbasicEnglish skillsas well as the new cultureand how to adapt to it.Asa second language speaker my worry about this program is thatit could be frustratingand complexfor ELL students. Some newcomer programs lastsix weeks to a year and thereisso much to learn about thelanguage, culture, society, andexpectations in such a short period of time. My recommendation for this program is that it should be longer and it also needsto be broken down in levels.
